Jumbo Mieremet launches fast-charging stations with battery storage in The Hague

Jumbo Mieremet in The Hague is the first supermarket in the region to offer a 400 kW DC fast-charging station. Thanks to smart battery storage, two cars can charge simultaneously without placing an additional strain on the power grid.

The system consists of a powerful fast charger combined with two BBOLT batteries with a total capacity of 430 kWh. During the day, the batteries supply the necessary power, while they recharge at times when the store uses less electricity or when energy prices are low.

INSIGHT INTO CONSUMPTION

We began by analyzing the supermarket’s energy consumption profile and the available grid connection. It turned out that fast charging during the day was not possible without smart buffering.

Using simulations, we determined the optimal combination of fast charger and battery capacity, including usage scenarios and power distribution.

INSTALLATION & INTEGRATION

The 400 kW DC fast charger and two batteries (430 kWh total) have been installed and integrated into the existing system.

Jumbo Mieremet wanted to offer fast charging, but ran into limited grid capacity. A direct connection to the grid for 400 kW charging was not feasible during the day.

By combining a powerful DC fast charger with battery storage, we have created a solution that enables high-power charging, prevents grid congestion, and ensures future-proofing.

NETWORK LIMITATIONS OVERCOME

During the day, there isn’t enough capacity on the grid to charge two cars simultaneously at 200 kW. The battery then supplies the necessary power, while recharging during off-peak hours.

How does battery storage work in combination with solar panels or wind energy?

Our battery stores excess energy locally whenever more energy is generated than is consumed. This energy is then automatically used during periods of higher demand or when market prices are favorable.

Can I make money through energy trading?

Yes. Stored energy can be sold intelligently through the imbalance and EPEX markets. Our software (BBox) automatically manages this process, allowing you to benefit from price fluctuations without having to lift a finger.

How much maintenance does the system require?
